Sazon Cubano
Cuban flavors from Sazon Cubano

Son, salsa, cha cha cha and Latin jazz are what local band Sazon Cubano is all about. The band brings the flavor of traditional, Cuban music to the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival. That the group is already popular on the island was proven beyond any doubt last May, when it performed in a sold-out Cas di Cultura for a wildly enthusiastic crowd. Sazon Cubano is made up of eight musicians, several of whom have come together again after the group Ricochet (1992) broke up in 2008 after the death of their drummer.

While Ricochet played popular music, a new course has been set with Sazon Cubano. Shurby Mariah, lead singer and band leader, tells more about his band: ``Our music is purely traditional, without the timbal. We go back to the roots of the music, with instruments like the tres (a three-stringed guitar), the bongo, the campano, the conga and the flute. Added to that are the bass and vocals and voilà, that’s us.’’

Sazon Cubano is made up of members Juan Tromp, Fan Ras, Nico Connor, Chencho Kelly, Vio Wester, Varona, Olga Antoinette and Shurby Mariah. The voices of the sugar cane plantations will come alive when you hear Sazon Cubano in action.
